Yuka: NERO skincare ratings

Ingredient information can help you choose cosmetics more confidently. Yuka is one tool for reading that information: its cosmetic score is based on an analysis of the ingredients listed in a product.

NERO reports an “Excellent” Yuka rating for the skincare products shown in its collection. This is information about the app’s evaluation, rather than a certification or a guarantee that a product will suit every person.

What is Yuka?

Launched in France in 2017 by Julie Chapon, Benoît Martin and François Martin, Yuka is a mobile application covering food and cosmetic products. Users can scan a barcode to consult information in its database.

The application is available on iOS and Android. Scanning a cosmetic product gives access to its listed composition, score and ingredient information. Always compare the information with the packaging of the product you are choosing.

How are cosmetics rated?

Yuka’s published method analyses the ingredient list and assigns ingredients to four categories: green, yellow, orange or red. The score depends on the highest-risk ingredient category and on the other ingredients in the formula. A red-category ingredient places the score below 25/100; an orange-category ingredient places it below 50/100.

What does “Excellent” mean?

It describes the result of Yuka’s scoring method for that product. It is not a clinical trial, an efficacy assessment or an individual allergy test. A high score does not establish that a product cannot cause irritation, allergy or another unwanted reaction.

Scores and methods may change. The product’s barcode, current packaging and the information available in the app are useful points of comparison.

Natural origin and tolerability

Natural origin describes where an ingredient comes from. It does not, on its own, guarantee tolerability, better performance or a lower environmental impact. All cosmetic ingredients are chemical substances, whether naturally derived or synthetic.

For NERO, black caviar and brown algae form a shared signature. Their extracts are combined with different cleansing, moisturizing and softening ingredients in each formula. The benefits of the finished product depend on that complete formula.

Using the rating when choosing NERO

  • Check the product’s complete INCI list.
  • Look for ingredients relevant to a known allergy.
  • Choose according to the product’s intended use and directions.
  • Stop using a product if it causes a reaction, and seek appropriate advice when needed.

A cosmetic product is not a treatment for a skin disease. A rating should not replace advice about persistent or significant symptoms.

The rating method is described by Yuka. NERO’s product pages identify the rating reported for each product; they do not establish individual tolerability.
