Irritation and bumps after shaving: caring for your skin
Florent Massis · March 29, 2023 · English edition updated October 23, 2026

Razor burn can leave skin feeling hot, uncomfortable or irritated. Reviewing your technique and the products you use can help reduce avoidable friction. These adjustments cannot guarantee that irritation will never return.
What is razor burn?
The term commonly describes irritation after shaving. Dry shaving, excessive pressure, repeated passes and worn blades can all contribute to discomfort. Bumps may also involve ingrown hairs and are not always the same problem as surface irritation.
Five practical adjustments
1. Soften the hair before shaving
Wet your skin and facial hair first. Shaving after a shower, or using a warm, damp cloth, can help soften the hair. Keep the water comfortable rather than very hot.
2. Maintain your razor
Use a sharp blade, rinse it between strokes and store the razor somewhere dry. Replace it according to its condition and the manufacturer’s advice; the American Academy of Dermatology recommends replacing disposable razors or blades after around five to seven shaves.
3. Use a suitable shaving cream or gel
A shaving product helps the razor glide. Avoid dry shaving. If your skin is sensitive, choose a product suited to it and do not persist with one that causes stinging or irritation.
4. Use a light touch
Shave in the direction of hair growth, with short, gentle strokes. Avoid pressing hard or repeatedly going over the same area. Do not try to shave away bumps or acne lesions.
5. Care for the skin afterwards
Rinse away the shaving product and pat dry gently. A cool, damp cloth may feel soothing. Apply a well-tolerated moisturizer or aftershave product according to its directions. A water mist is optional; it does not replace moisturizing care.
Where does the NERO balm fit?
NERO Aftershave Balm is an alcohol-free gel-cream designed to moisturize and soothe skin after shaving. Black caviar and brown algae extracts accompany ingredients including shea butter, jojoba oil and grape seed oil.
The formula is fragranced. Natural origin does not guarantee that it will suit sensitive skin or a known allergy. Check the INCI list before choosing and use on intact skin.
What if irritation has already appeared?
Avoid further friction and pause products that sting or make the symptoms worse. Do not apply improvised mixtures or assume an ingredient is suitable because it is natural. If irritation persists, becomes painful, shows signs of infection or keeps returning, seek advice from a healthcare professional.
Persistent razor bumps may need a change in shaving method or professional care. Cosmetics cannot guarantee the prevention or treatment of all shaving-related problems.
A Bulgarian inspiration: Kranevo
The Black Sea coast, including places such as Kranevo, forms part of NERO’s Bulgarian inspiration. Botanical extracts, including chamomile, complement the marine signature in the balm’s complete formula.
